Department of Veterinary Microbiology

The Department of Veterinary Microbiology came into existence as a part of the then Mysore Veterinary College, Bangalore established in the year 1958 and offering Undergraduate, Post graduate and Ph.D degree programme. The Dept is currently functioning with four teaching faculty with one Professor, One Associate Professor and two Assistant Professors. At present, 11 Ph.D and 10 MVSc students are studying. The Post-graduate programme leading to M.V.Sc in Veterinary Microbiology was started in the year 1966 and Ph.D. in Veterinary Microbiology in the year 1969. Students from different parts of the country and the world have post-graduated from this Dept. So far 225 students have completed their MVSc and 45 students have completed their Ph.D from this Dept. Ph.D Scholar of the dept. Dr.B.M.Chandranaik  was awarded ‘Jawaharlal Nehru Award for P.G. Outstanding Doctoral Thesis Research in Agricultural and Allied Sciences-2013 (Animal Sciences)’ by ICAR, New Delhi on 29.07.2014. Many of the alumni of this Dept. are holding key positions in prestigious governmental and private organizations nationally and internationally.  Many PG students were awarded young scientist award / Best research paper award/ Best Research presentation awards in various National and International conferences. More than 30 research projects funded by various external agencies were completed and currently having four with one RKVY project as external funding projects.  The dept is having four patents in vaccines and Diagnostic tests.  OIE twinned Rabies Diagnostic Laboratory is established in 2015 and offering services in the diagnosis of rabies in animals and estimation of antirabies antibodies in vaccinated dogs and cats.

SERVICES PROVIDED

  • Diagnostic services for diagnosis of Rabies in Animals
    • Screening of serum samples of Dogs and Cats for neutralizing Anti rabies antibodies in vaccinated animals by RFFIT.
    • Charging Rs.3000/- per serum sample for estimating neutralizing anti rabies antibodies in serum samples of  rabies vaccinated pets by Rapid Fluorescent Focus Inhibition test (RFFIT).
    • Screening of animal brain samples for Rabies by Direct Florescent Antibody Test(DFA).
    • Charging Rs. 300/- per sample  for diagnosis of Rabies in Animals by Direct Fluorescent Antibody test (DFA) for detection of rabies virus in brain samples.
  • Diagnostic services for the farmers/clinicians
    • Culture and sensitivity test for clinical samples (Milk from Mastitis cases and other clinical samples)
    • Screening for Animal Brucellosis (Dairy animals/Sheep/Goats – serum and  milk)
    • Screening  Farm animals for Tuberculosis by Tuberculin test
    • Screening for Human Brucellosis – Veterinarians and Para veterinarians
    • Vaccination of ILFC Dairy calves against Brucellosis
