Department of Veterinary Physiology

The department of Veterinary Physiology started functioning from the year 1958.The MVSc degree programme started in 1969 and PhD programme in 1999. So far, 45 students have completed MVSc and 6 scholars have completed PhD degree programme. ‘Antral Follicular Dynamics in Buffaloes’ was the completed research project funded by ICAR with the budget outlay of Rs. 18 lakhs.

There is glorious history of writing books in Kannada for the benefit of the students and farmers by the staff from the inception of the department such as by Prof. V. Ravivarma Hegde, Prof. K. Thimmaiah and Prof. M. Narayana Swamy, either on Veterinary Physiology in particular or on Animal Husbandrypractices in general. The Kannada book edited by Prof. M. Narayana Swamy titled ‘Tene Mareya Kranthi Ragi Lakshmanaiah’ is considered as a reference book for a chapter in the Kannada Text book of first Pre – University class from the Academic year 2013-14.

During recent times the post-graduate research has been concentrated on establishing normal values in native cattle of the state, such as haematological and biochemical profile in Hallikar cattle, Amrith Mahal cattle, Mandya sheep, Malnad Gidda, oxidative stress and hormonal profile during summer stress in Hallikar cattle, haematological and biochemical profile in working Hallikar cattle, Ovarian antral follicular dynamics in native goats & Ankamali pigs and Reproductive status in NARI Suwarna sheep. A good number of postgraduate students have passed NET and SRF examination bringing laurels to the department.  

Services offered and facilities:

The department has established a new postgraduate laboratory with modern equipments. The services are provided to the postgraduate students of other departments with respect to determination of haematological parameters and biochemical parameters. An ancient Egyptian human pregnancy diagnosis test extended to cattle, named as Punyakoti Test or Seed Germination Inhibition Test is giving promising results for pregnancy detection in cattle and the same is included in to the booklet of packages of practices on modern animal husbandry published by the university and technical knowhow and do how of this test is provided to the farmers and researchers.  The staffs have served as resource persons in the training programmes conducted by the Karnataka Veterinary Council and at other Universities outside the state.
