Department of Veterinary Public Health and Epidemiology

Brief note
The Department of Veterinary Public Health and Epidemiology was established in the year 1995. Dr. L. Muniyappa was the first Head of the Department followed by Dr. B. Puttabyatappa, Dr. M. Sathyanarayana Rao, Dr. Rathnamma and from 11.05.2007 Dr. Leena, G. heading the department. Presently the department has two faculty members, both are having Doctoral Degree and have been recognized as Post Graduate teachers by the University and served as members of Student Advisory Committee. ICAR Sponsored Project on Outreach Programme on Zoonotic Diseases entitled “Diagnosis of Rabies and Anthrax in Animals” is under operation in the department in collaboration with Department of Veterinary Microbiology and Department of Veterinary Pathology. The faculty of the department are actively involved in teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate students in the field of Veterinary Public Health and Epidemiology as per the VCI and ICAR guidelines and also the faculty are engaged in research and extension activities for the betterment of farming community. The department has adequate basic infrastructural facilities to conduct research in the areas of food safety, Zoonoses, foodborne infections and intoxications, epidemiological investigation of diseases and environmental hygiene.

Services offered

The department is involved in providing consultancy services to the public and farmers on prevention and control of zoonotic diseases, food hygiene, food safety, treatment and disposal of sewage and environmental hygiene.

Facilities available

The Department has laboratory facilities for UG and PG teaching

  • The department has required facilities and equipements for cultural anad molecular identification of common food borne bacterial zoonotic pathogens
  • The department has PG teaching faculty and offering minor or supporting courses for PG and pP.h.D students
  • The staff of the department are actively involved in conducting extension activities for the benefit of farmers viz., awareness programmes / training programmes / radio talks on prevention and control of zoonotic diseases, food safety etc..
