Department of Veterinary Biochemistry

Brief Note:
The Department of Veterinary Biochemistry, Bangalore was instituted in 1994 from the inception of first VCI syllabus with just an undergraduate laboratory as its infrastructure.   Dr. T.R.S Rangachar was the first Head, succeeded by Dr.Jayaprakash and subsequently by Dr. V.Girish Kumar. Presently, the department has under-graduate, clinical biochemistry and biotechnology laboratories. The clinical biochemistry and Animal biotechnology laboratory were established from the grants of milk and milk products organization and DST-FIST in 2010 and 2015 respectively.  Besides, the department has received funds from KVAFSU, Zoo Authority of Karnataka and Span diagnostics, Surat for its research activities.

The MVSc and PhD in Veterinary Biochemistry were started in 2010 and 2013 respectively.   Till date, twelve and two students have completed their MVSc and PhD degrees respectively, while there are four doctoral students on roll.  All these students are blessed for gaining their expertise not only from the college but also from the support of IISc., NIANP., IVRI., NCBS and JNC, Bangalore.   The areas of research are reproductive, environmental  and nutritional biochemistry. The department has been successful in identifying the presence of sperm maturation proteins in bull testis and controlled reversible disruptive effects of phytoestrogens on spermatogenesis in rats for the first time. Besides, research work with respect to cell free seminal-mRNA expression as a valuable tool to evaluate bull semen, proteomic and genomic studies associated with qualitative traits in chicken meat and tigers as non seasonal breeder and non induced ovulator have also been established.

This Department has successfully organized the Annual Conference in Biochemistry and Biotechnology in 2017 as well as South Zone National Veterinary Physiology Quiz competition in 2013 and 2017. The staff and PG students of the department have published  37, 61  and 18 number articles in  International,  national and popular journals respectively.  Todate, staff and PG students are recipients of Life time achievement award, Young Scientist award, Best oral and Poster presentation awards.  The staff in department includes Dr.V.Girish Kumar and Dr. Ramesh.H.S, besides another post of Assistant Professor being vacant.
