Department of Veterinary Pathology

The History:
The Department of Veterinary Pathology came into existence during the year1958 when the Veterinary College was established. Since inception, the department has come a long way in dissemination of knowledge in a systematic way. UG and PG courses were offered under Trimester System and later the Semester system was adopted. Currently, the UG courses are offered as per VCI regulations.

A few of the stalwarts of the department are:


Dr.Syed Mohiuddin

(1958-1975) was the first Head of the Division who established the Department of Veterinary Pathology.

Dr.S.J.Seshadri

(1975-1991) Former Head was instrumental in establishment of the KDDC Disease Diagnostic laboratory in different parts of Karnataka.

Dr.R.N.S.Gowda

Former Head, was the first Vice-Chancellor of Karnataka Veterinary Animal & Fisheries Sciences University which came into existence in 2005.

Dr.S.K.Vijayasarathi

Former Head, is the pioneer Pathologists in India and the President for the Society for Toxicologic Pathology in India

The Agenda of Activities
1. Academic activities
a. Under-Graduate:
The courses are offered for the II, III, IV & V Year students of BVSc & AH as per the Veterinary Council of India rules & Regulations. The courses comprise of General Veterinary Pathology I & II, Special Veterinary Pathology I & II and Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosis I & II.
b. Post-Graduate:
Post Graduate teaching comprise of 15 courses for Masters degree &  9 courses for Doctoral Degree in Pathology. So far, 166 MVSc and 34 PhD degrees have been awarded from the department.

2. Research Activities
Many research projects have been undertaken and reports submitted under ICAR, KDDC, State Government and Private organizations.
The department has handled 2 Indian Council of Agricultural Research projects –
1. Project on bovine paraplegia
2. Project on Marek’s disease
The department was involved in a collaborative research project with Department of Microbiology on Calf Mortality covering five southern states.
Identifying the problems of farmers of Karnataka, The Department of Pathology had taken up three State funded research projects, namely:
1. Preparation and purification of hyper immune sera against rabies.
2. Pathology and pathogenesis of New castle disease in poultry.
3. Etiopathology, diagnosis and control of HPS in poultry.
In addition, the department of pathology has handled 33 University sponsored research projects and successfully completed with valuable results.

3. Diagnostic Services 
The department has been involved in extending diagnostic services related to animal diseases which are referred to the department of Pathology for investigation.
The following  services are extended :
-  Post mortem diagnosis,
-  Rabies diagnosis
-  Poultry disease diagnosis
-  Histopathology
-  Exfoliative cytology
-  Farm inquiries/ Epidemiological investigations

4. Extension Activities
Information is disseminated to Farmers, Pet owners and Commercial Clients on disease diagnostics of common etiological agents, laboratory investigative services and advice on disease prevention & management.
Training Programs are arranged for Veterinarians in private sectors, Field Veterinary Officers, Veterinary and Livestock Inspectors, Farmers and Masters / PhD students from other Institutes.
Media dissemination of information through Radio & Television network are carried out.
Two National Seminars & 5 One Day Seminars have been organized for the benefit of scientists, students & farmers.

5. Recognitions & Awards to the Department of Pathology
a. The staff of this department have been honoured with many awards from time to time which includes the Best Veterinarian Award, Best Teacher Award by ICAR, FIAVP Award, Best Poultry Pathologist Award, Young Scientist Awards, Best Thesis Award etc.
b. Award of Funding under FIST Programme of Department of Science & Technology, Govt of India., for Infrastructure Development. The Department is well equipped with modernized histopathological processors, research microscopes with display facility
