VETERINARY PHARMACOLOGY AND TOXICOLOGY

Undergraduate: The Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology is offering four core courses for the undergraduate (B.V.Sc.&A.H) students. These include Unit -1 (General Pharmacology), Unit -2  (Drugs  acting on Autonomic Nervous System), Unit -3 (Drugs acting on Central Nervous system), Unit 4 (Drugs acting on Different Body systems), Unit 5 (Veterinary Chemotherapy) and Unit - 6 (Veterinary Toxicology). The infrastructure includes ex-pharma experimental tool, isolated organ bath, rotarod, spirometer, photoactometer, analgesic hot plate, Plythesmograph and various research grade instruments. Advanced spectrophotometer facility to estimate various pharmacological and toxicological parameters to support diagnosis of various poisoning cases in domestic animals is also available in the department.  The department is well established with experimental pharmacology laboratory to carryout laboratory exercises as per MSVE - 2016 regulations prescribed by Veterinary Council of India (VCI).

Postgraduate: The Department is also offering postgraduate programme from the AY: 2017-18. The Department is well equipped and facility to carry out research in the area of Ethnopharmacology,  Neuropharmacology and Toxicology studies. All the animal experiments are conducted as per the CPCSEA guidelines and after approval from the Institutional animal Ethics Committee approval.

Research: Department of Veterinary Pharmacology and Toxicology is equipped with facilities for investigation of various toxicological cases like heavy metals poisonings and plant poisonings in domestic animals. Apart from teaching, the faculty is engaged in research primarily in the area of Ethnopharmacology, Neuropharmacology, Residue toxicology of antibiotics in milk. Further, elucidating pharmacodynamics of potential herbal extracts and phytochemicals and identification and characterization of  medicinal and poisonous plants of regional importance are undertaken by the faculty.

Extension: The Department is regularly conduct training programmes/ workshops in the area of clinical pharmacology & toxicology for the students, farmers, extension officers of KMF and Veterinary Officers for Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services Government of Karnataka. The Department also extends advisory, consultancy and Diagnostic services to the livestock farmers and   field veterinarians in the State departments.
