Karnataka State has got vast area of forest having rich in wild animals. It is important to understand various aspects of Wildlife Management, Biology, Behaviour, Nutrition, Diseases and Healthcare aspects. It is equally important to undertake research in various aspects of Wildlife on the above lines. No such organized facility is available in our country. Hence, Karnataka Veterinary, Animal and Fisheries Sciences University (KVAFSU), Bidar has started Wildlife Veterinary Research Institute recently with the financial support from Government of Karnataka

The Institution is being established at Doddaluvara village, Somwarpet taluk, Kodagu district, which is located about 4 km from Hebbale on Somwarpet Road (15 km from Kushalnagar). The Deputy Commissioner of Kodagu district has allotted 72.44 acres of land for the Institution. 15.52 acres of additional land is being sanctioned by the Deputy Commissioner. The site is surrounded by the hillocks creating natural forest environment.

1. To undertake post-graduate education leading to award of PG Diploma, Master degree and Doctor of Philosophy in Wildlife.
2. To take up research in different areas in Medicine, Nutrition, Breeding and Management, Diseases, Biology and Behaviour of Wildlife.
3. To provide facilities for diagnosis of wild animal diseases.
4. To impart training to in-service personnel working in Zoological Gardens, National Parks and Wildlife Safaris and sanctuaries also to provide extension services.
5. To create awareness among local people on protection and conservation of Wildlife in their natural habitat.
6. To undertake research on cellular and molecular genetics and also forensic laboratory activities and investigation.
